Laten we maar meteen terzake komen. De grootste hold up aller tijden in dit land vindt plaats terwijl u dit leest. Alhoewel er geen wapens mee gemoeid zijn, worden 300 miljoen mensen gegijzeld. Laat er geen misverstand over bestaan: na in de afgelopen vijf jaar een half biljoen dollar gestolen te hebben om de zakken te vullen van de oorlogsprofiteurs, na de zakken gevuld te hebben van hun collega-oliebaronnen a rato van meer dan 100 miljard tijdens de voorbije twee jaar, beginnen Bush en zijn vrienden – die binnenkort het Witte Huis moeten verlaten - de Amerikaanse schatkist te plunderen. Ze proberen zoveel mogelijk zilverwerk mee te slepen op hun weg naar de uitgang.
Wat ze ook zeggen, hoeveel ijzingwekkende woorden ze ook gebruiken, ze gaan door met hun oude truuk om angst en verwarring te zaaien in een poging om zichzelf en de hoogste één procent schandalig rijk te maken en te houden. Lees bijvoorbeeld de eerste vier paragrafen van een artikel in de New York Times van maandag en u zal begrijpen waar het werkelijk om draait:
“Op het zelfde moment dat beleidsmakers werkten aan de details van het 700 miljard dollar reddingsplan voor de financiële sector, begon Wall Street al uit te kijken naar manieren om er van te profiteren.”
“Financiële bedrijven lobbyden om alle problematische investeringen te beschermen, niet alleen die investeringen die gerelateerd zijn aan hypotheken.”
“Tegelijkertijd dingen investeringsbedrijven naar het contract om alle activa te controleren die de schatkist bij de financiële instellingen weghaalt, een rol die hen honderden miljoenen dollars per jaar aan honorarium kan opleveren.”
“Niemand wil uitgesloten worden van het voorstel van de schatkist om slechte activa van de financiële instellingen over te kopen.”
Ongelooflijk. Wall Street en zijn achterban hebben deze knoeiboel gecreëerd en nu gaan ze hem opruimen als bandieten. Zelfs Rudy Giulani lobbyt voor zijn firma in de hoop aangenomen en betaald te worden als consult in het reddingsplan.
Het probleem is dat niemand echt weet waar die ineenstorting nu eigenlijk over gaat. Zelfs de minister van Financiën Henry Paulson geeft toe dat hij niet weet welk bedrag er precies nodig is (hij koos zomaar het nummer 700 miljoen!).
En toch krijsen ze dat het einde nabij is. Paniek! Recessie! De grote depressie! De millenium bug! Vogelgriep! Killer bijen! We moeten het reddingsplan nu goedkeuren! De hemel valt naar beneden!
